Incorporated in July 1960, the Island has its own sense of identity, distinct from its neighbors, Seattle and Bellevue. With a population of just over 24,000, Mercer Island has been widely recognized as one of the premier residential communities in the State of Washington.

General Info

The core workweek is forty (40) hours, Monday through Friday 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.  However, most departments offer flexible work schedules, depending on the position. Some positions require weekend, evening shifts, holiday, and/or overtime.
 
The City of Mercer Island provides a competitive salary for all positions, based on regular market review. Salaries of employees falling under a collective bargaining agreement are adjusted according to conditions of the agreement.
 
Except for those employees who are under contract, all employees are "at will" employees. This means the City or the employee may terminate employment at any time. Some City positions require union membership. This requirement is indicated on the job announcement.
