Project Details/Neighborhood
- SE 24th St and 72nd Ave SE
Background
The intersection has been identified as a location for pedestrian safety improvements in response to a history of pedestrian and vehicle accidents and speeding patterns.
Description
Narrow the intersection by removing eastbound and westbound left turn lanes to create more pedestrian space in the roadway shoulder using paint and plastic delineator posts. This will improve sightlines in all directions and shorten crossing distances for pedestrians, while providing a traffic calming effect by visually narrowing the road. This improvement balances the needs of drivers and pedestrians.
Project Timeline
Construction occurring in September 2021.
Project Budget
This project is funded out of the $51,150 PBF Plan Implementation budget.

Intersection reconfiguration was completed in September 2021. A study completed in October 2021 shows a 10% reduction in speeding vehicles and a 6% reduction in average speed. Lower vehicle speeds have been shown to reduce the risk of serious injury and help to create a more comfortable environment for pedestrians and bicyclists. The City will continue to collect speed data in this area to measure the effectiveness of these improvements.
