Background

The City currently operates 85 pressure-reducing valve (PRV) stations to supply water to the Island. Previous investigations by the City showed that approximately 25 percent of the existing PRVs are in poor condition and many others have operational issues and deficiencies.

Description

An assessment of the 20 poorest conditionPRV stations within the system was completed in 2021. It included a visual condition assessment and analysis to rank and prioritize them for replacement or upgrade in the coming years. Through the assessment, the five highest risk stations were selected and four will be replaced under this project. These stations are located at four different locations. Construction will be performed in 2024, based on the design work from www.mercerisland.gov/WU0175

SCHEDULED WATER MAIN SHUTDOWN
Thursday, September 12, 2024, from 9 am-5 pm.

This water main shutdown is to install a bypass to install a new PRV station. Partial lane closure in the areas is expected. Flaggers will maintain one-way alternating traffic, at 4110 78th Ave SE. Mailers and door hangers distributed to the residents in the area.

A new underground vault was installed this week for a new pressure reducing valve station on 78th Avenue near West Mercer Way. Contractor crews will spend the next couple of weeks installing piping, valves, and other components inside the vault and then it will be tested and activated.

Water system work is underway on 78th Avenue between SE 40th Street and West Mercer Way to excavate for a new underground vault to house a new pressure reducing valve station. The contractor is maintaining a one lane roadway during work hours and the flaggers are giving priority to school bus traffic. This roadway will be closed on Tuesday Sept 3rd for several hours so the contractor can set the new concrete vault in the ground. Morning bus traffic will be allowed through before the closure and the vault should be set before afternoon bus traffic. A detour will be in place along SE 40th Street down to West Mercer Way.

Roadway Closure with Detour Routes, Limited pedestrian access :
Tuesday, September 3rd, from 7 AM 3 PM (Scheduled
work)
This work is to set up a large excavator to install the concrete PRV Vault. The time it takes to set up, install the vault and take it down will be the duration of the roadway closure. Due to low-hanging power lines, the excavator will take up both lanes for this duration—a map of the roadway closure and detour routes. Once the crane is removed, the road will be opened back up to one way with flaggers. Postcards will be sent to those residents in the area.
