Alert: I-90 Ramp Closures
May 10, 2023 - WSDOT is conducting several necessary I-90 ramp closures that will impact traffic flow on Mercer Island. These closures are in close sequence throughout this month:
- From 10:00pm on Friday, May 19 to 5:00am on Monday, May 22, the ramp from Bellevue Way Southeast to eastbound I-90 and I-405 will be closed. The westbound I-90 HOV ramp will also be closed.
- From 10:00pm to 5:00am nightly on Tuesday, May 23 and Wednesday, May 24, both the northbound and southbound I-405 ramps to eastbound I-90 will be closed.
- From 10:00pm on Wednesday, May 31 to 5:00am on Thursday, June 1, the ramp from northbound I-405 to eastbound I-90 will be closed.
Individual travel alerts with more detail will be shared leading up to each closure. While none of the ramps being closed are located on Mercer Island, vehicles needing to access eastbound I-90 will be detoured onto westbound I-90 towards Mercer Island, where they will then exit at East Mercer Way and re-enter eastbound I-90.
The City immediately began collaborating with WSDOT, the Washington State Patrol, and our neighboring cities once these closures were announced. We are working with these agencies to emphasize ample signage, public notification, clear detouring, and traffic management support. The City has also added additional staffing across our Police Department and is working to deploy local traffic control measures to help keep Island streets clear.
Watch for upcoming alerts on these closures. As always, you can stay updated on traffic impacts using WSDOT’s Real-time Travel Map.
Additional Alert:
Islanders should be aware that King County construction work has also closed North Mercer Way between Island Crest Way and 81st Ave SE. This work will take place Monday through Saturday approximately until the end of June, with detour routes and off-duty police officers on-scene to redirect vehicles during peak hours.
