Council Leadership Issues Statement on Property Vandalism
August 8, 2024 - In response to the landscaping failure and subsequent investigation at the City’s property on Island Crest Way, Mercer Island Mayor Salim Nice and Deputy Mayor David Rosenbaum issued a statement to the community today, August 8:
Dear Mercer Island Community,
The recent act of landscape vandalism at our city-owned property is an unacceptable attack on our local environment and community values. This deliberate and malicious destruction of City property is a criminal act that will not be tolerated.
Soil tests reveal concentrated herbicides were intentionally added, leading to significant plant failure. This constitutes felony-level vandalism, harming our environment and incurring substantial costs.
Our City values its natural beauty, and we're committed to finding and fully holding accountable the perpetrators of this malicious sabotage.
I urge anyone with information about this incident to come forward and contact the Mercer Island Police Department's Non-Emergency Line at 425-577-5656.
Together, we'll send a clear message that vandalism of our shared public resources is unacceptable.
Thank you for your commitment to Mercer Island.
- Mayor Salim Nice and Deputy Mayor David Rosenbaum
