A Joint Statement from Mayor Nice and Deputy Mayor Rosenbaum on Hate-Based Vandalism at Islander Middle School
In response to the January 1, 2025 hate-based vandalism at Islander Middle School, Mayor Nice and Deputy Mayor Rosenbaum released a joint statement to the community:
We commend the swift and diligent efforts of the Mercer Island Police Department to investigate the recent hate-based vandalism at Islander Middle School.
Mercer Island is proud to be home to many Jewish institutions and a vibrant Jewish community. Antisemitism has no place here, and we stand firmly in solidarity with our Jewish neighbors against hate and intolerance.
The individuals responsible for the vandalism sought to sow division through antisemitic and racist symbols and phrases, but their actions have only strengthened our community's resolve to stand united against hate.
We are heartened by the outpouring of support from residents, local organizations, and faith groups – all reaffirming that such acts have no place on Mercer Island. We are grateful for our strong partnership with the Mercer Island School District, and for the teachers and staff who work every day to make all students feel welcome and safe, in solidarity against hate.
As we move forward, we remain committed to fostering an environment where diversity is celebrated, and everyone feels safe and valued.
Together, we will continue to uphold the values of respect, inclusion, and unity that define our community.
- Salim Nice, Mayor
- Dave Rosenbaum, Deputy Mayor
