Mercer Island Police Department Earns Reaccreditation
December 15, 2021 - The Mercer Island Police Department recently earned reaccreditation from the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs (WASPC) after a multi-phase process spanning the past few months. Accreditation is an important mark of excellence and helps solidify that the department is operating under best practices and standards for law enforcement. Certification is awarded for a four-year period after initial accreditation has been achieved – MIPD has been accredited for many years.
“I’m proud that our department achieved reaccreditation by WASPC,” Mercer Island Police Chief Ed Holmes, said. “This is a significant achievement by our officers and staff and signifies to our community that we hold ourselves to the highest standards of law enforcement for all on the Island.”
Accreditation certifies the department’s administrative and operational effectiveness, fair recruitment and employment practices, better records management, improved use of technology, health and safety steps, training, codes of conduct and prisoner security, among other important law enforcement tasks.
A special thanks to Mercer Island Police Commander Jeff Magnan for leading the charge as Accreditation Manager, and to the officers, staff and leadership for making this possible.
