What You Can Do

Solar panels on the roof of a home.

The City has committed to Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction targets of 50% by 2030, 75% by 2040, and 95% by 2050

YOU are a crucial part of achieving this goal! Here are some suggestions and resources for steps to take to help us reach our targets:

  1. Review: Take a look at our 2022 GHG Reporting Dashboard to see our Island-wide emissions.
  2. Start tracking: Complete this national online calculator to estimate how many pounds of greenhouse gases your household and habits contribute to the atmosphere each year. You can also look at your home energy usage by setting up your My PSE Account on PSE's website (Detailed instructions here).
  3. Electrify: Consider replacing your old gas, oil, or electric furnace with a heat pump. There are many incentives currently available for making this switch, as well as electrifying other home appliances, like water heaters, dryers, and stoves.
  4. Be Efficient: Consider some easy ways to reduce energy usage at home.
  5. Generate Energy: A great way to lower your carbon footprint is to install solar panels on your rooftop. If that is not an option, look to offset your energy use by buying Green Power from Puget Sound Energy.
  6. Travel Wisely: Bike, walk, or take public transportation whenever possible. Try to minimize driving gas-powered cars/trucks (especially if solo). Consider carpooling, or buying a clean electric vehicle.  Shopping local is another great way to lower your footprint. 7. Compete: Looking for some friendly competition? Join the Mercer Island Climate Challenge! Form a team and compete with friends and neighbors to see just how much you can reduce using actions that are tailored to our region.
