Fireworks Information

Lit Fireworks

The discharge of consumer fireworks is NOT permitted anywhere on Mercer Island, at any time.

Consumer fireworks are prohibited on Mercer Island at all times, including the Fourth of July, following both an emergency order and an ordinance adopted by the City Council. The prohibition applies to all consumer firework products as defined by the state’s RCW 70.77.136.

This ordinance does not prohibit professional fireworks displays, which require specific fire prevention and safety measures to be in place. You can find out more about permitting a professional fireworks display by contacting the Mercer Island Fire Marshal through Eastside Fire & Rescue.

Background

The prohibition of consumer fireworks on Mercer Island arises from the significant safety risk to users, the burden they place on our City’s fire and emergency services, and the noise pollution they cause for neighbors, pets, and veterans. The Island’s Climate Action Plan also states that hotter, drier summers are making wildfires more likely, even in our semi-urban environment. Our fire department notes that 911 calls surge significantly on July 4, primarily due to emergencies related to the use of fireworks.

Almost all other cities in our region have banned the use and sale of fireworks in recent years. The Council considered these factors before delivering a unanimous vote to adopt a permanent prohibition on fireworks.

Enforcement and Emergency Response

Fireworks-related emergencies place strain on our first responders. The Mercer Island Police Department has extra officers on duty during the Fourth of July holiday period to ensure the public's safety and enforcement of the fireworks prohibition.

Fireworks violations can be reported using the Police non-emergency dispatch line: 425- 577-5656.

As always, call 911 for any emergency.
