General Tree Care Tips
- Tree selection and placement are important decisions a homeowner makes when landscaping or replacing a tree. Matching the tree to the site benefits both the tree and the homeowner.
- Inspect trees carefully each season. If there are concerns, contact a qualified arborist for a thorough evaluation.
- Avoid planting brittle species where falling limbs could injure people or property.
- Prune trees when young and always use correct pruning methods - See the Mercer Island Guide to Pruning Basics for more information.
- Don't allow trees to be topped (see above handout for explanations).
- Erect barriers around trees at, or beyond, the drip line during construction. This will help minimize construction damage.
Selecting a Tree Service Company
There are many excellent, well-trained arborists in the Mercer Island community. Services range from tree consultations and tree management plans to tree maintenance and tree removals. The certification process managed by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) helps ensure that residents work with an individual trained in tree identification, biology, worker safety, and proper pruning methods.
Additional Resources
- The International Society of Arboriculture also provides a series of useful brochures that discuss many of the basic principles of tree care, including:
- For more information about eagles, visit the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
- The Mercer Island Tree Canopy Assessment (last conducted in 2018) tallies the total amount of public and private tree cover on the Island.
