Spring is upon us, and like many of you, my family and I are beginning to turn our attention to the warmer months ahead. We find ourselves filled with anticipation about spring vegetable garden planting, summer bike rides, the numerous lake activities we all love, and the return of Seafair and the tradition of Mercer Island's own Summer Celebration! 

While we shift our focus to the future, I want to take a moment to reflect on the accomplishments of the City Council and the work the City of Mercer Island has done on behalf of Islanders this past four months.

Today, I regrettably share with the Mercer Island community that I have implemented a number of workforce reductions in response to revenue shortfalls resulting from the impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic. This unparalleled situation has led to very difficult and painful actions that deeply affect staff and residents alike. The decisions I’ve made over these past two months are choices no City Manager ever wants to face.

November 29, 2023 - Earlier this year, the City Council voted to permanently close City Hall. City staff, the City Council, and outside experts have since been hard at work planning for a solution to the City Hall closure, as part of the City’s existing Long Range Facility Planning process.

Mercer Island has a variety of grass and synthetic turf multi-use athletic fields serving resident and regional programming. The Parks and Recreation Department strives to maximize the use of all athletic field venues, while preserving the park assets. Field allocation prioritizes in-season sports, on-Island users, and recreation-based youth programs.

The Aubrey Davis Park Picnic Shelter is a 30' x 25' covered shelter with seating at eight tables for 64 people. There are three park grills, a drinking fountain, two 20 amp electrical outlets, a children's play area and a 200' x 150' grass play area.

BAT Night with Woodland Park Zoo 

On Friday, December 9 from 6-8pm, Mercer Island Police Department will go head-to-head in a fierce holiday light decorating competition with Police Departments from Renton, Issaquah, Bellevue, and more! The event will take place at the Renton Community Center.

October 5, 2022 - In addition to other dangerous substances like fentanyl, homemade products containing high levels of THC are currently circulating in the region. These drugs can be particularly harmful when consumed, as there is no way to tell their concentration or true ingredients without laboratory testing, making the risk of overdose and adverse affects very high. High-THC products have been linked to severe mental health episodes alongside other adverse impacts, and are often targeted towards youth and young adults.

The Mercer Island Police implemented a bicycle patrol in 1993 and it currently consists of one supervisor and eight officers.
 
There is one police bicycle instructor, certified by the Law Enforcement Bicycle Association (LEBA), who conducts the initial 35 plus hours training course and training updates. Officers must pass a written test and cycling tests which include numerous agility maneuvers, tactical dismounts, ascending and descending stairways, firearms, and police tactical procedures.
 

Since 2004, the City has conducted a biennial community survey to track customer satisfaction with City services, to identify resident priorities, and to get input on significant community issues. Through 2016, the survey was conducted by telephone (by EMC, Inc) with 300-400 randomly-selected Island residents of all ages. In 2018, the survey was conducted by mail (by ETC Institute). No survey was conducted in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Mercer Island Bike Skills Area (BSA) is a new skill-building course for riders of all ages. Designed by American Ramp Company, the BSA includes beginner and intermediate bike trails with jumps and other features, as well as a bicycle playground area for less-experienced riders. 

Join us for a virtual community meeting to discuss the revised conceptual design and provide feedback.

Review and provide feedback on the updated draft of the 30% design for a new Bike Skills Area facility. The meeting will include a presentation and breakout sessions.

Starting on July 16, 2018, the City of Mercer Island launched a 3-month free-floating bikeshare pilot program intended to provide new mobility options for residents commuting to and from the Park & Ride (8000 N Mercer Way), as well as other users who may wish to conduct errands or travel around the Island car-free, as a supplement to local public transit options. After the 3-month pilot, bikes were generally available for another year. [NOTE: Although this pilot has now ended, LimeBike continues to operate in the region.]

BMX Course Community Meeting

The City of Mercer Island Park Operations Division will hold a virtual meeting on March 1, 2021 at 7:00 PM with cyclists who utilize the BMX course at Upper Luther Burbank Park and other interested community members. The meeting will include a presentation from Park Operations staff on the BMX course rules and day-to-day management. Attendees will be able to ask questions and provide comments after the staff update.

The City of Mercer Island collects a business and occupation (B&O) tax, which is a tax on gross revenues earned each tax year. All businesses doing business in the city, whether located in Mercer Island or outside the city limits, must have a Mercer Island endorsement on their State business license. Come celebrate Arbor Day with Mercer Island Natural Resources Team! Arbor Day is an annual event where we celebrate our urban canopy and help to create future healthier forests.  This year, we're looking to get 850+ native plants in the ground at Gallagher Hill Open Space. In addition to planting we will have plenty of mulch to spread, and weeds to pull out of the ground. We could use all the help we can get!

This year we will be splitting Arbor Day up into 3 shifts, the Full day shift- 10am-2pm, and Half shifts. Please arrive on time to ensure you get a proper planting demo.

January 17, 2025 - Late last week, the Mercer Island Police Department asked the public’s help to identify two suspects in connection with the January 1, 2025 vandalism at Islander Middle School involving antisemitic and racist symbols and phrases. Tips and information led to the identification of both suspects.

Ali has worked for the City of Mercer Island for over 20 years.  Ali grew up in the Puget Sound area and began working for the City as a work study student during college in the Youth and Family Services Department.  In 2001, she returned to the City as the Deputy City Clerk and in 2004 was appointed City Clerk.  In June 2018, she was appointed Assistant to the City Manager and in October 2019 she was appointed Chief of Administration to coordinate internal service functions - IT, HR, Communications, Customer Service, and City Clerk.

Feb 17, 2021 – At the Tuesday night (Feb 16) City Council Meeting, the State Auditor's Office (SAO) presented its annual report on the City's financial statements and book-keeping protocols. In a detailed process that takes many months, all local governments in Washington must be audited annually by the SAO.

May 11, 2021  –  The Mercer Island Thrift Shop – a City-run resale boutique that helps fund critical youth and family programs – welcomes a new transition leader to oversee the recovery of this important community institution. City Manager Jessi Bon announced Sharon Perez as Interim Thrift Shop Administrator, having started on May 10.

The City of Mercer Island operates under the Council/Manager form of government. In this form, the City Council of seven elected members hires a City Manager to act as Chief Executive of the City. Nov 25, 2019 - At its Tuesday, November 19 meeting, the City Council unanimously endorsed an updated version of a pledge to continue local and regional work on greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction measures. 

June 10, 2020 - In light of the recent protests over the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis two weeks ago, the City Council joins with the community in committing to meaningful progress in combating racism, and proclaiming a renewed commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in Mercer Island.  The incident provides yet another example of the important work yet to be accomplished here and across the country.

The City’s Comprehensive Plan states, “Mercer Island is not an island unto itself.” While we are part of a complex regional system, we strive to maintain local control and preserve a safe and livable residential community. We endeavor to continuously provide and improve quality municipal services and foster fiscal responsibility.
